About the Scholarship.

This Scholarship will be awarded to the selected applicant upon successful enrolment as a full time student to complete a one year Graduate Diploma in Orientation and Mobility at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) during 2023.

The value of the Scholarship is approximately $35,000 as payment towards program fees.

The Scholarship Holder will be supported to undertake work integrated learning topics with Guide Dogs SA/NT and will be offered a permanent position as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor with Guide Dogs SA/NT upon successful completion of their studies.

About the course.

The Graduate Diploma in Orientation and Mobility is a one year Graduate Diploma hosted online by the UNSW.

This course provides graduates with the specialised knowledge and practical experience required for them to operate as an industry certified Orientation and Mobility specialist, able to provide services to clients with low vision or blindness.

What opportunities can it lead to?

The role of an Orientation and Mobility Instructor at Guide Dogs SA/NT is essential to supporting clients to move safely and independently through their world. All of our services are tailored to meet the individual goals of our clients and include the assessment and implementation of programs in hospital, home and community settings.

Who should apply?

  • You may be looking to specialise and change career direction or you may be a recent graduate.
  • You will be currently residing in Adelaide or have a genuine desire to become permanently located in Adelaide at your expense from February 2023.
  • You will also have completed a degree in either Nursing, Education, Human Movement, Disability, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Developmental Education, Social Work, Vision Science or a similarly related field.

You will possess the following:

  • An undergraduate qualification in one of the aforementioned fields.
  • A genuine interest in working with people of all ages living with blindness or vision loss.
  • A person-centered approach to work with the ability to build rapport with people from a range of backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • An innovative and adaptable approach to new or unpredictable situations.
  • Sound problem solving abilities.
  • High self-motivation and goal orientation.
