Volunteer to raise a future Guide Dog.

A yellow Labrador Retriever puppy lies on a wooden surface outdoors, looking directly at the camera with a calm and gentle expression. The background is bright and slightly blurred.

Becoming a Puppy Raiser is one of the most rewarding ways to volunteer with Guide Dogs SA/NT. You’ll welcome a puppy into your home and play a vital role in helping them develop the confidence, skills and experiences they need for a future as a Guide Dog, Assistance Dog or Facility Dog.

With expert training and support every step of the way, you’ll help shape a life-changing partnership that gives someone greater independence, confidence and freedom.

Who can become a Puppy Raiser?

Our volunteer Puppy Raisers help prepare puppies for their future careers by introducing them to everyday life, building their confidence and supporting their early development.

To become a Puppy Raiser, you’ll need to:

  • Live in metropolitan Adelaide or surrounding areas (within approximately one hour of Adelaide).
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Hold a current driver’s licence and have access to a vehicle.
  • Be physically able to manage a dog that will grow to over 30kg.
  • Be able to incorporate the puppy’s training and socialisation into your daily routine, including attending regular training sessions during business hours.
  • Ensure the puppy is not left alone for more than four hours at a time, which may require flexible work or study arrangements.

Your home will also need to:

  • Have a secure yard with fencing at least 1.5 metres high.
  • Ensure pools, spas, ponds and other bodies of water are securely enclosed.
  • Remove any dangerous plants or poisonous substances.
  • Allow the puppy to live and sleep inside the home.
  • Be prepared for the occasional toileting accidents, puppy chewing and dog hair.

If you rent your home or live within a body corporate, written approval from your landlord or body corporate will be required before welcoming a puppy.

What's involved?

Puppies join our Puppy Raising Program from around 8–10 weeks of age and remain with their Puppy Raiser throughout their early development before beginning formal training.

As a Puppy Raiser, you’ll incorporate your puppy into your everyday routine while introducing them to a wide variety of people, places and experiences. These early socialisation opportunities are essential in helping puppies become calm, confident and focused working dogs.

You’ll never be on your own. Every Puppy Raiser is supported by a dedicated Puppy Raising Advisor who provides ongoing training, guidance and encouragement throughout the journey.

Without the commitment of our incredible Puppy Raisers, we couldn’t raise the Guide Dogs, Assistance Dogs and Facility Dogs that help transform lives every day.

Please note that not every puppy will continue through to become a working dog. Occasionally, puppies are withdrawn from the program if another path is better suited to them. In these circumstances, puppies cannot be rehomed with their Puppy Raiser, except in emergency boarding situations.
