What is Human Guide Training?

Two women smile and walk together; one wears a black blindfold. They stand in front of a purple Adelaide Fringe sign. Both have crossbody bags and casual outfits.

Human Guide Training teaches people how to safely and confidently guide a person who is blind or has low vision.

Delivered by Guide Dogs SA/NT, this interactive training combines practical techniques with insights into the lived experience of vision loss, helping participants provide respectful, effective assistance in workplaces and throughout the community.

Whether you’re supporting customers, clients, colleagues or members of the public, Human Guide Training provides simple skills that can make a lasting difference.

Creating more accessible communities

Why Human Guide Training matters.

Small actions can have a significant impact on someone’s confidence, independence and safety.

By learning Human Guide techniques, your staff or volunteers will gain the confidence to assist people with low vision or blindness respectfully and appropriately whenever support is needed.

Benefits include:

  • Creating a more accessible and inclusive workplace
  • Improving customer and client experiences
  • Building staff or volunteer confidence when offering assistance
  • Supporting disability inclusion and accessibility goals
  • Helping create safer, more welcoming communities

What the training includes.

Our standard Human Guide Training session runs for approximately two hours and can be delivered at your workplace or another nominated venue.

Participants learn through a combination of discussion and practical activities, including:

  • Understanding blindness and low vision
  • Human Guide techniques and best practice
  • Safe guiding in a variety of environments
  • Blindfold activities to experience guided travel firsthand
  • Practical exercises completed in pairs

Training can also be incorporated into professional development days, accessibility initiatives, team-building activities or awareness events such as World Sight Day or International Day of People with Disability.

Participants receive a Certificate of Participation upon completion.

What others have to say

Hear from organisations we've worked with.

“Undergoing the Human Guide Training with the support of Guide Dogs SA/NT was a great experience and a way to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experience for someone with a vision impairment, and the challenges they will face when accessing the public transport network.

Being blindfolded was daunting for sure and made you appreciate the importance of having a guide to navigate new and busy areas. This training will support our staff at Keolis Downer Adelaide and Keolis Downer as a whole to gain an understanding of accessibility needs. It provides adequate support for the blind and low vision community to be able to independently utilise public transport to move throughout the community.”

Jackson
Accessibility Officer, Keolis Downer

“It is a course which should be available and offered to everyone in society, starting from school children, and including workplaces, community services, etc. Learning how to provide whichever type of specialised support to someone who may need or appreciate such help is a wonderful thing!”
