Enhancing family wellbeing during National Carers Week

When you’re caring for someone else, it’s all too common to put your own needs last. That’s why we are taking the opportunity this National Carers Week to say ‘thank you’ to the people who perform this valued role.

Our Allied Health Services team coordinates a monthly Carers’ Group to support people caring for a loved one living with vision impairment or autism.

Participants in our Carers’ Group also have the opportunity to attend a twice-yearly Carer’s Retreat, giving them time to connect, share experiences and focus on their own health and wellbeing.

At our recent retreat, held in September 2019, one Carer told us:

“Caring can be very isolating and many people do not understand what our lives are like. To be able to get away is a huge treat and is very much needed so we can feel encouraged to keep going, and get recharged to face the challenges that our caring role entails.”

Our Carers’ Group is open to anyone caring for a Guide Dogs client who has vision impairment or autism. Other members say the group supports their wellbeing by enabling them “to be with other people who understand” and providing an opportunity for “networking, connection and sharing information without any pressure.”

I need help

I thought that the room was really dark, but actually it wasn’t the room, it was me.

I know that I will be fine because if I need help, I have Guide Dogs to turn to.
