The Sir Charles Bright Scholarship is awarded annually to students with a disability who are undertaking post-secondary education at University, Technical and further education or other recognised post-secondary educational institutions in South Australia. The scholarship provides valuable encouragement and financial support, enabling students to access much-needed resources and pursue personal development opportunities.

The Sir Charles Bright Scholarship Trust was established by Malcolm Penn OAM in 1985 and named in honour of Sir Charles Bright, a former judge of the Supreme Court who contributed greatly to people with disabilities and the disadvantaged in our community.

At Guide Dogs SA/NT, we are proud to support the Sir Charles Bright Scholarship Trust which, to date, has enabled more than 300 students with disabilities to pursue their educational goals. Previous recipients of the scholarship include many clients of Guide Dogs SA/NT such as Sarah and Elizabeth (pictured below), as well as Guide Dogs SA/NT Case Manager, Simon, who received the award in 1987.

According to Simon, the scholarship is not only financially beneficial but provides an important opportunity for students with disabilities to connect with role models and mentors.

‘The funds were very welcome but by far the greatest benefit was the validation and emotional support I received from the Trustees,’ Simon said. ‘As a young student with vision impairment, their belief in my potential was invaluable.’

‘I would encourage any eligible student to apply for the Sir Charles Bright Scholarship. The Trustees really understand and are supportive of people making a life for themselves and achieving their dreams and goals.’
