The Vision Services team at Guide Dogs SA/NT recently hosted a two-day Life Skills Camp for its teenage clients, designed to provide opportunities to develop skills in orientation and mobility, daily living and social development. Of course, there were also plenty of opportunities to make new friends and have fun. Participants enjoyed a selection of activities, including:
IKEA Flat Pack Challenge: Students were tasked with shopping for storage units in IKEA. This involved catching public transport to the store using a variety of apps to plan the route; using mobility techniques to navigate revolving doors, escalators, stairs and lifts; locating and choosing items; taking part in a fun scavanger hunt; purchasing lunch then finally assembling the units using a variety of tools.
West Beach Adventure: Students had an exciting day attempting a range of 70 different obstacles including the 20 metre ‘Leap of Faith’ vertical drop and a 3-person giant swing.
AFL Max: Students soared to new heights on the trampolines whilst playing a game of dodge ball, bounced their way through the inflatable obstacle course and enjoyed the rock-climbing walls.
Safe to say everyone slept well after those two days of adventure! If you know someone who might benefit from joining our Life Skills sessions in South Australia, visit our Leisure & Lifestyle Services page.
